We worked all weekend on getting it set up for the birds. It now has a cool playgym that James built using wood from two trees we removed from the lot after we moved in, a swing, a boing, and a couple of potted plants (bamboo and cat palm), and a bird bath.
So far everyone loves being out there except for the Greys. Gandalf is better than Cameron about it - Cammy just wants to come in almost right away. The little birds really love it - Phoebe and Freddie and Chloe crawl and fly all over and nibble on the plants. I think that even after only a few days it's had a positive impact on Freddie. She seems even more alert and active than last week. Even Chili Pepper enjoys being out there. He and Buzz have been out every day and amazingly, he's quiet when he's out there. I think the solid roof helps him feel secure.
So far, so good. We're very happy with it and glad that everyone can get outside now for some fresh air and sunshine! They come in pieces and you assemble it like a cage. It's pretty straightforward to assemble but you definitely need two people because of the size of the panels.
It's very heavy, so no need for bolting, and it's designed so that the roof doesn't catch the wind and lift it up. There are vents/spaces for the wind to get through. We've had up to 45 mph winds here lately (and since we put it up) and it's rock solid. It doesn't wobble or sway at all.
I think it would take very intense/strong winds to budge the thing and the birds wouldn't be out in it with those kind of winds anyways.
We thought about how to get them outside since we moved here 10 months ago. We had a screen porch at the old house. After checking into various, i.e. super expensive, options for screening in our patio, this seemed like a good compromise.
Our patio table and chairs are located close by, too, so they can see us. I'm looking forward to some nice days enjoying the back yard with them!
